We are honored to feature Troy Torrence as this week’s guest presenter for the Mindful Public Safety Hour. With over 23 years of service at the Indiana State Police (ISP), Troy brings a wealth of experience in health, fitness, and mindfulness-based resilience training to the field of public safety.

Education and Professional Background

Troy holds a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and serves as the Health Management Specialist for the ISP Training Division. In this role, he oversees comprehensive wellness and conditioning programs for recruits and seasoned officers alike, emphasizing both physical and mental well-being.

ISP CrossFit: Functional Fitness for Public Safety

As part of his work, Troy leads the ISP CrossFit program—an integrated fitness approach designed to build strength, endurance, and resilience through full-body, high-intensity workouts adaptable to any level of conditioning.

By combining strength and cardio through functional movements, ISP CrossFit delivers balanced, sustainable results faster than traditional programs that separate the weight room from the aerobics studio. The program is rooted in a simple idea: when officers train their whole body, they also strengthen their mind.

Speaker and Trainer

A dynamic and engaging presenter, Troy is a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences on health, wellness, and self-care for police, fire, and other public safety professionals. His recent appearances include the 2021 Global First Responder Resilience Summit and the October 2023 Coptimizer Podcast.

In his trainings, Troy blends exercise science, mindfulness practices, and research-based resilience tools to help officers manage stress, improve focus, and enhance overall performance. His programs are practical, evidence-driven, and rooted in lived experience.

Upcoming Presentation: “Our Beautiful Nose – The Science and Art of Nasal Breathing”

Join Troy on Wednesday, October 22 at 8 PM (ET) for a special session of the Mindful Public Safety Hour. In this presentation, Troy will explore the science behind nasal breathing—a simple yet powerful tool for reducing stress, improving focus, and maintaining peak alertness under pressure.

With his deep understanding of physiology and mindfulness, Troy offers a grounded, science-based perspective on the power of breath in daily life and in the high-stress environments of public safety.

Aligned with the CMPS Mission

Troy’s integrative approach to wellness reflects the Center for Mindfulness in Public Safety’s mission to bring evidence-based mindfulness and resilience practices to those who serve and protect. His work embodies the belief that sustainable performance begins with presence, awareness, and care for both body and mind.
