Yoga allows Norfolk police some flexibility in training

The Norfolk Police Department believes they are one of the first police departments in the country to implement regular yoga classes into their training regimen.

“There was a little bit of pushback at first,” said Christopher Scallon, the department’s peer support unit director. “But when you start hearing about the history of yoga, how warriors did it before battle to get their heads clear, we learn there’s a physiological benefit.”

Recruits have a required class each Wednesday, while multiple weekly classes are offered to the roughly 740 officers on the force as an option for their fitness hour. The program started a couple months ago.
